Struck by love over the net, Indians try to cross into Pakistan

NEW DELHI – Two Indian girls who fell in love with Pakistani men over the internet, were detained by the Indian security forces while trying to cross the Line of Control (LoC) a defacto border in the Kashmir region, news reports said on Monday.

Asha Patel, 24, and Ayesha Sharma, 22, realized that love does have boundaries when they were caught by security personnel on Sunday at Chakan-da-Bagh in Jammu, the winter capital of India-administered Kashmir.

“Both had even decided the point at the border fence where they would cross, a method normally used by the militants,” the NDTV network reported adding that the army caught them minutes before they crossed and handed over them to police.

Jammu and Kashmir is among the most heavily guarded states in India, as New Delhi alleges that militants aided by rival Pakistan regularly infiltrate through the LoC to carry out attacks in the state.

Police said Patel began chatting with Mumtaz Khalid, a Lahore youth over the internet four years ago. “This was followed by phone calls till it developed into love. The emotions became so intense that sidelining the prickly practicalities of the border, they solemnized their marriage on the internet,” a police officer told the Times of India.

Police said Patel from western Mumbai city which is located over 1,500 kilometres from the LoC and Sharma, a resident of northern Uttaranchal state got to know each other through their boyfriends.

Though they are freeo back home now, the girls said they would make efforts to unite with their beloved. “We may not be able to meet at the India-Pakistan border but we can still meet at other places. They cannot stop us from meeting,” Patel was quoted by NDTV as saying.
